Afghanistan UN Mission Calls for Inclusive Political Process
DID Press: Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has welcomed the appointment of Rabab Fatima as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the mission and advance an inclusive political process and women’s rights in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the mission said the extension of UNAMA’s mandate by the UN Security Council until 17 June 2027 should be used to improve the effectiveness of the mission and align its priorities with the needs and aspirations of the Afghan people.
The statement emphasized the need for an Afghan-led, inclusive political process involving women, civil society, democratic forces and other genuine representatives of the population. It said the goal should be the establishment of a legitimate, accountable and representative system based on the will of the Afghan people.
Nasir Ahmad Faiq, head of Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, also called for the swift appointment of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan in line with Security Council Resolution 2721.
Faiq stressed that UN engagement with Afghanistan should be linked to tangible progress on human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, inclusive governance and compliance with international obligations, warning that engagement should not lead to the normalization of the current Taliban rule without meeting these conditions.
