5 Afghan Migrants Found Dead, 14 Still Missing in Nimroz Desert

DID Press: The bodies of five Afghan migrants who disappeared while attempting to reach Iran through an irregular border route have been found in the deserts of Afghanistan’s western Nimroz province, while 14 others remain missing as search operations continue.

Local sources in Nimroz said the five victims were among a group of 19 young Afghans who set out for Iran via unofficial migration routes about two weeks ago. According to the sources, Taliban authorities are continuing an aerial search using helicopters to locate the remaining 14 missing migrants.

The group reportedly became stranded after their vehicle broke down in the Dasht-e Margo area of Chakhansur district. Left without transportation, the migrants lost their way in the desert and were exposed to extreme heat, dehydration, and harsh environmental conditions, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Images circulating on social media appear to show several bodies lying across the desert, with some partially buried beneath drifting sand.

Fatal incidents involving Afghan migrants attempting to cross into Iran through irregular routes have been repeatedly reported in recent years. Extreme temperatures, lack of water, disorientation in remote desert areas, and abandonment by human smugglers remain among the leading causes of death along these routes.
