UN Warns Energy Crisis Threatens Afghanistan’s Urban Future

DID Press: United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has warned that Afghanistan’s worsening electricity shortage is undermining urban life, disrupting education and economic activity, and threatening the long-term sustainability of the country’s cities unless investment in renewable energy is accelerated.

According to UN-Habitat, persistent power shortages have become a major obstacle to daily life across urban Afghanistan, limiting access to essential services and constraining business and educational activities.

The agency stressed that expanding renewable energy, particularly solar power, offers the most viable path to addressing the country’s growing energy challenges and strengthening urban resilience.

UN-Habitat said investment in solar energy is no longer simply an option but a fundamental requirement for rebuilding urban infrastructure, supporting sustainable development, and improving living conditions across Afghanistan.
