DID Press: A senior United Nations official has warned that the Islamic State continues to pose a serious threat to international peace and security despite sustained global counterterrorism efforts.
Addressing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Olguljeren Nyazberdiyeva, Head of the Office of the UN Deputy Secretary-General, said counterterrorism operations have weakened ISIS’s senior leadership and reduced the group’s ability to centrally direct attacks.
She noted, however, that the group has adapted to changing conditions and continues to operate through its regional affiliates.
According to Nyazberdiyeva, although ISIS has become more decentralized, its affiliated branches remain connected by a common ideology and continue to exploit fragile security environments and protracted conflicts to expand their influence.
She stressed that the organization’s ability to adapt underscores the continued need for strengthened international cooperation in combating terrorism and preventing the group’s resurgence.
