FBI: No Word on Afghan-American Businessman Four Years After Disappearance

DID Press: US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says it is still seeking information about the whereabouts of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American businessman who disappeared in Kabul four years ago.

The FBI said Habibi disappeared near his home in Kabul on August 10, 2022. According to the agency, Taliban intelligence officials detained Habibi and his driver from their vehicle and also detained 29 employees of Asia Consultancy Group.

The FBI said it has received no information about Habibi’s condition or whereabouts since his disappearance. The Taliban has also not provided information about his fate or location.

Michael Borgwald, an official with the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division in Washington, said the agency remains committed to bringing Habibi home to his family and urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the FBI.

Habibi previously served as head of Afghanistan’s Civil Aviation Authority before working as an adviser to the telecommunications company Asia Consultancy Group.

The FBI released a missing-person poster for Habibi in 2025. The U.S. State Department has also offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his location, recovery and return.

Four years after his disappearance, Habibi’s fate remains unknown, while his family continues to await information about his whereabouts.
