Taliban Order Eviction of Shia Residents From Nawabad Township in Ghazni

DID Press: Taliban authorities have reportedly ordered residents of the predominantly Shia Nawabad Township in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province to leave their homes within one week, warning that those who refuse could be forcibly evicted and have their houses demolished.

Local sources said on Tuesday that Taliban officials issued the ultimatum to residents of Nawabad, giving them seven days to vacate the area. The sources said the Taliban threatened to remove residents by force and demolish their homes if they failed to comply.

According to the sources, a delegation of around 80 residents traveled to Kandahar on Tuesday to raise objections to the decision and seek talks with senior Taliban officials.

The reported order resembles a previous eviction directive involving Omid-e Sabz Township in Kabul, where predominantly Hazara and Shia residents have also faced pressure to leave their homes.

The repetition of such eviction orders has raised concerns among residents and rights advocates over alleged discriminatory policies and growing pressure on Afghanistan’s ethnic and religious minorities.

Legal experts cited in the report said forced evictions and threats to demolish homes without due legal process or compensation could violate fundamental principles of property rights and human rights. International human rights standards place strict limits on forced displacement and require lawful procedures and safeguards for affected residents.
