DID Press: United States has designated two of Brazil’s largest organized crime networks, the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), as terrorist organizations, raising concerns about possible U.S. involvement in Brazil’s political and security affairs.
Under the move, the United States has described the two groups as transnational security threats. Critics, however, argue that using the “terrorist” designation goes beyond combating organized crime and could create greater scope for Washington to expand its influence over Brazil’s political and security affairs.
According to the report, PCC and CV are among the most powerful criminal networks in Latin America and have been involved in violence, corruption and control of various areas. However, their primary objective is to obtain criminal power and profits rather than pursue political or ideological goals.
The move has also been welcomed by Brazil’s far-right political camp, raising concerns about its potential impact on the country’s political environment and elections.
Analysts warn that the broader use of the “terrorist” designation could blur the line between combating organized crime and political intervention, potentially allowing governments to use such labels for political purposes.
