DID Press: Afghanistan has, for the first time, been included among the countries eligible to assume the rotating presidency of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), marking a new step in the country’s growing role in Asian cricket.
At the ACC’s annual meeting in Bangkok on August 22, members agreed to add the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) to the list of boards eligible to hold the council’s rotating presidency.
Until now, the ACC presidency had rotated among India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The latest decision adds Afghanistan to the rotation.
The decision does not mean Afghanistan will immediately assume the presidency. Rather, the ACB is now formally eligible to take the position in the future. The timing of Afghanistan’s turn has not yet been announced.
The meeting also saw the election of a new ACC executive committee. Khalid Al Zarooni, vice chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board, was unanimously elected as vice president of the Asian Cricket Council.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board described the decision as a sign of the growing standing and confidence in Afghan cricket at the continental level. It said the development could create greater opportunities for Afghanistan to participate in the leadership of Asian cricket and host future ACC events.
