EU Allocates €15 Million to Strengthen Afghanistan’s Food Resilience

DID Press: European Union has allocated an additional €15 million to support its cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) on strengthening climate resilience and Afghanistan’s food systems.

The funding will be provided through a 12-month programme aimed at addressing food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty and the impacts of climate change.

The programme includes providing locally sourced food for school meals, developing climate-resilient livelihoods, promoting sustainable natural-resource management and supporting the private sector in agriculture and food processing.

Eric Boom, head of the Cooperation Section of the EU delegation in Afghanistan, said the funding demonstrates the EU’s continued commitment to the people of Afghanistan, particularly women, children and vulnerable communities.

Under the programme, greater emphasis will be placed on developing agribusinesses, improving food safety and quality, and expanding markets. School feeding programmes will also continue through targeted distribution of locally produced snacks to primary school students.

John Aylieff, WFP Representative and Country Director in Afghanistan, welcomed the EU’s support, saying the investment would help strengthen livelihoods, local food systems and economic opportunities for women and young people.
