European Parliament to Examine Deportations of Afghan Migrants

DID Press: European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights is set to hold a meeting on Thursday to examine the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers and migrants from European Union member states.

The meeting comes amid growing cooperation between some European governments and the Taliban over the return of Afghan nationals. A three-member Taliban delegation recently travelled to Germany for discussions concerning the deportation process, according to reports.

The European Parliament is expected to examine the legal and human rights implications of returning asylum seekers to Afghanistan.

Human rights organizations have warned that women, journalists, activists, former government employees and other vulnerable groups could face persecution, arbitrary detention or reprisals after returning to Afghanistan.

The debate has intensified following the deportation of 30 Afghan nationals from Germany to Kabul.

The United Nations has previously called on countries to halt forced returns of Afghans, warning of serious human rights risks facing individuals sent back to the country.
