PPP Freezes Support for Pakistan Government Legislation

DID Press: Pakistan’s opposition-aligned ruling coalition partner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has suspended its support for government legislation until its concerns over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, judicial appointments and other issues are addressed.

PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar said the party would not support the government’s legislative business until it sees meaningful progress on its demands. He stressed that the PPP is not a “complete ally” of the government and that its parliamentary backing should not be taken for granted.

Qamar said the PPP had already conveyed its reservations to the government but had seen little progress. The dispute centres in particular on the conduct of the AJK elections and the appointment of judges, issues that have strained relations between the PPP and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The decision could make it more difficult for the government to pass legislation in Parliament, where it has previously relied on PPP support. The two parties have already clashed over several legislative measures, with the PPP blocking or delaying government business on multiple occasions.

In the latest development, the PPP blocked parliamentary consideration of two government bills concerning natural-gas revenue adjustments, prompting their postponement. The move came amid broader tensions within the governing coalition over the AJK elections and proposed changes to Pakistan’s provincial structure.

The PPP has previously indicated that it would withhold support for government legislation until its outstanding concerns are addressed, while maintaining that cooperation could continue on matters of national importance
