DID Press: Supreme Court of the United States has rejected a request by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose stricter restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the closely watched November midterm elections.
The justices declined the administration’s request to overturn a federal judge’s ruling that had blocked implementation of the restrictions. The court said the Trump administration had not, at this stage, demonstrated a “likelihood of success on the merits” of the case.
The proposed restrictions would have allowed the United States Postal Service to impose stricter requirements on mailed ballots. Opponents warned that enforcing the rules could disenfranchise some voters and disrupt the delivery and processing of mail-in ballots.
Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from the decision. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was appointed by Trump, joined the majority.
The ruling means existing mail-in voting rules will remain in effect while further proceedings in the case continue.
