DID Press: The New York Times reports that turmoil at the U.S. Department of Defense under Secretary Pete Hegseth has disrupted senior commanders’ focus on key military missions, while the war with Iran has further intensified the Pentagon’s challenges.
According to the newspaper, Hegseth’s tenure has been marked by the removal of senior commanders and restrictions on officers’ training and academic activities, contributing to growing distrust among senior Pentagon officials.
The New York Times also reported that the Pentagon has expanded the use of polygraph tests amid concerns over leaks of classified information. Around 50 members of the Joint Staff were reportedly subjected to the tests as part of an investigation into suspected leaks concerning U.S. weapons stockpiles and the Iran conflict.
The newspaper said the war with Iran has compounded existing problems, affecting military morale and putting pressure on U.S. weapons stocks, including interceptor missiles. A recent U.S. government watchdog assessment also documented shortages of advanced munitions and damage to U.S. military infrastructure in the region.
The report further said Hegseth has removed or blocked the promotions of more than 80 generals and admirals, leaving some senior positions vacant for extended periods.
Current and former Pentagon officials quoted by the newspaper described Hegseth’s tenure as a persistent distraction that has diverted senior commanders from their core priorities and deepened mistrust within the department.
