UK Afghanistan War-Crimes Inquiry Costs Government £58 Million

DID Press: An independent inquiry into allegations of unlawful killings by British special forces in Afghanistan has cost the UK government £58 million so far, according to figures reported by the BBC. The inquiry is examining allegations concerning operations by the UK Special Forces, including the SAS, between mid-2010 and mid-2013.

The inquiry was established after reports emerged about British special-forces operations in Afghanistan. It is examining allegations that detainees, unarmed civilians and children were killed during some operations, as well as concerns raised within the British military about possible unlawful killings.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the direct cost of the inquiry, together with related departmental costs, had reached £58 million by March 2026. The case has also required substantial personnel resources from the ministry.

The inquiry’s official terms of reference cover alleged unlawful activity by UK Special Forces during deliberate detention operations between mid-2010 and mid-2013. They also examine concerns raised at the time and the adequacy of subsequent investigations, including Operation Northmoor and Operation Cestro.

The inquiry has held both public and closed hearings since October 2023. The UK Ministry of Defence said in its latest published update that planned Phase 3B hearings were delayed in November 2025 because new information had become available.

The SAS Association has supported the continuation of the inquiry while expressing concerns about the length of the process and its impact on serving and former personnel and their families.

The inquiry remains ongoing, and no final findings have yet been issued. The allegations under investigation should therefore not be treated as established findings of criminal or unlawful conduct until the inquiry reaches and publishes its conclusions.
