DID Press: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the abolition of the veto power held by the permanent members of the UNSC, stressing the need to reform the global decision-making system.
In an opinion piece published by Bloomberg, Erdogan said global decision-making mechanisms must be adapted to current realities, arguing that the existing structure of the Security Council still reflects the political order established after World War II.
Referring to his slogan, “The world is bigger than five,” Erdogan said the principle should be transformed into a concrete agenda for reforming the international system.
According to Erdogan, abolishing the veto privilege should be both the starting point and a strategic objective of fundamental reforms to the Security Council, enabling the body to better reflect the realities and balance of power in today’s world.
