Karachi Ranked Fourth-Least Liveable City Globally; Tehran 164th

DID Press: Karachi has been ranked 170th out of 173 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2026 Global Liveability Index, making it the world’s fourth-least liveable city. The city received an overall score of 43 out of 100.

According to the index, only Dhaka, Tripoli and Damascus ranked below Karachi. The EIU assesses 173 cities using more than 30 indicators across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Copenhagen topped the 2026 ranking for the second consecutive year, followed by Vienna and Melbourne. Sydney and Zurich rounded out the top five.

The ranking also recorded significant declines among cities in the Middle East. Muscat fell 14 places and Kuwait City dropped 12, while Tehran fell into the bottom 10, ranking 164th out of 173 cities.

The report also highlighted improvements among several Chinese cities. Ten of the 15 cities that recorded the largest upward movements in the 2026 ranking were in China, with improved healthcare scores contributing to their gains.
