Woman Gives Birth Outside MSF Hospital in Afghanistan’s Khost Province
DID Press: A pregnant woman gave birth outside a hospital run by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost province on Wednesday, 22 Mizan, according to local sources. Taliban authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident.

According to sources cited in local reports, the woman went to the hospital to deliver her baby but was not allowed to enter immediately. She subsequently gave birth outside the hospital building.
The Taliban governor’s office in Khost has confirmed the formation of a special committee to investigate the incident. Mustaghfar Gurbaz, the Taliban governor’s spokesperson in the province, said the committee would conduct an impartial investigation to establish what happened and determine the necessary measures.
The incident comes amid widespread restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls, including bans on girls’ secondary education and women’s access to university education. These restrictions, alongside weaknesses in Afghanistan’s healthcare system and shortcomings in the provision of timely medical services, have increased concerns about the vulnerability of pregnant women.
If reports that the woman was delayed or denied admission to the MSF hospital are confirmed, the organisation should also provide a clear explanation of how the case was handled and why the situation occurred.
Protecting the lives of mothers and newborns requires accountability from both the authorities responsible for ensuring access to healthcare and medical facilities responsible for providing professional care. Neither should evade responsibility by shifting the blame to the other.
