Pakistan Bans Live Broadcasts of Terrorist Attacks and Security Incidents

DID Press: Pakistan’s Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has directed private news channels to refrain from broadcasting live footage, rebroadcasting, or publishing images of security incidents, including explosions, shootings and terrorist attacks.

Under the directive, television channels are permitted to publish only information verified by Pakistan’s military and security agencies. Broadcasters have also been instructed to use broadcast-delay systems and establish independent editorial committees to strengthen oversight of the content they air.

PEMRA has warned that violations could result in legal action under Pakistan’s media regulations, including legislation enacted in 2002.

The decision follows the declaration of an emergency and the introduction of special government measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province that has experienced political and security tensions in recent weeks.

The restrictions come amid continuing tensions between Pakistan’s government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Imran Khan. Protests by Khan’s supporters following his arrest have reportedly escalated into clashes and violence in some areas.

The restrictions on live coverage are intended to prevent the dissemination of unverified footage and information that could compromise security operations. However, requiring media outlets to rely on information verified by military and security agencies has raised questions about editorial independence, public access to information and the limits of press freedom during security crises.
