Afghanistan Red Crescent Chief Says International Aid Falls Short of Public Needs

DID Press: Shahabuddin Delawar, head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, has criticised the limited scale of international assistance to Afghanistan, saying current support is only enough to help people survive rather than meet their broader needs.

Delawar made the remarks at a gathering marking the Afghan Red Crescent Society’s fundraising week. He linked the limitations on international assistance to Afghanistan’s political situation and the Taliban’s lack of international recognition.

He said countries that describe themselves as defenders of human rights have placed Afghan leaders on blacklists and have not recognised the country’s government. In his view, these measures have affected the delivery of international support.

Highlighting the shortage of humanitarian resources, Delawar stressed that Afghan citizens and domestic organisations must make greater efforts to assist people in need.

He called on the public to contribute to aid efforts for vulnerable families, saying domestic support could help address some of the existing gaps in humanitarian assistance.
