France Makes Normalization of Ties with Taliban Conditional on Changes in Afghanistan

DID Press: France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has stated that the country has had no diplomatic relations with the Taliban government since 2021, adding that the normalization of ties depends on changes in Afghanistan’s political situation and compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2593, particularly respect for the rights of women and girls.

The ministry said France has provided more than €177 million in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan since August 2021 and has welcomed more than 17,000 Afghan nationals.

According to the French Foreign Ministry, the value of trade between Afghanistan and France reached €35.1 million in 2025.

The ministry also noted that the resumption of cooperation with Afghanistan would depend on political and security developments in the country.
