DID Press: The Washington Post has reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump has asked China to use its influence over the Islamic Republic of Iran to mediate an end to the war between Tehran and Washington. The request highlights Washington’s frustration with other mediators and its efforts to use Beijing’s diplomatic leverage to contain the crisis.

According to the report, published on Friday and citing a US official familiar with the matter, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the request with Trump’s backing. Beijing has also conveyed Washington’s message to Tehran.
The Washington Post further reported that US Vice President JD Vance is playing a central role in advancing the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts to end the war. As part of these efforts, Vance sent a letter last month, written in a conciliatory tone, to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
These moves are being viewed as evidence of Washington’s failure to achieve its military objectives against Iran and its defeat in direct military confrontation. The Trump administration is therefore seeking an honourable exit from what has become a quagmire in Iran.
