US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and the Pakistani Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke by telephone about the Afghan peace process on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a statement released by Pakistani Foreign Ministry, the two sides exchanged views on the current situation in the region, and bilateral issues.
Both sides agreed that de-escalation was important for peace and stability in South Asia.

This comes as US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is expected to visit Pakistan regarding the peace process in Afghanistan.

Both FMs discussed Khalilzad’s trip to Pakistan as well.
They discussed Pakistan’s facilitating role and agreed that the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad’s forthcoming visit to Islamabad would provide an opportunity to further build on the gains made so far, said the statement.
“Foreign Minister reiterated that Intra-Afghan dialogue was an important component of the reconciliation process,” the statement added.

Pakistani has always been accused of supporting Taliban. Therefore, Pakistan’s role in the peace talks is important.
Earlier, Imran Khan’s remarks about the interim set-up in Afghanistan received widespread criticism.
