Following recent feuds between the presidential palace (Arg) and the council of presidential candidates, Shahab Hakimi, a presidential candidate discussed peace, elections and government’s deficiencies in an exclusive interview with DID Press in Kabul.
Shahab Hakimi, who is also the spokesman of the presidential candidates’ council says that they will not negotiate with leaders of NUG and that Ashraf Ghani is the main obstacle to peace in Afghanistan.
The remarks come as Abdullah Abdullah has recently called for negotiations between the government and the presidential candidates.
“Intra-Afghan dialogue is the only way to establish peace in Afghanistan and we should have a brotherhood approach towards the Taliban,” said Shahab Hakimi.
Speaking about the political status in the country, Hakimi said, “National Unity Government (NUG) is the only cause of all turmoil and crisis in Afghanistan.”
“If electoral commissions are equipped with the most advanced machines, transparent elections will be impossible with the current administration,” he added, pointing to widespread frauds in the past elections.
In response to a question that many experts believe the country may head towards a civil war if president Ghani steps down, Hakimi said, “this view is completely wrong because the conditions have changed, comparing to 2001 and 2002.”
