Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen took a stance against what he said as the Afghan government is keeping the names of the negotiating team members secret, and attributed it to differences among political sides.
“The reason behind keeping the negotiating team of the political sides hidden is either a matter of political differences or it is controlled by some powerful individuals which is neither considered as a joint team of the political sides nor has a political authority or the support of the political sides,” Shaheen twitted as the ninth round of US – Taliban peace talks are set to begin in Doha Qatar.
US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad headed to Doha to resume the peace talks with the Taliban, US state department said in a statement on 20 August.
Shaheen stresses that “In case of disagreements among political sides or the influence of the powerful individuals, the team is incompetent and has no political authority”.
He also called on the Afghan political sides to clear their stance regarding the issue.
“The political sides should make their stance clear about the issue (intra-Afghan negotiations),” he said.
Still, the intra-Afghan talks is expected to be held after US-Taliban peace deal.
