Many of these women say their families abandon them and leave behind the burden of responsibility after being sentenced to prison.

According to Afghan Women’s News service, most of the women are imprisoned due to killing their husbands and moral corruption.

Farahnaz (pen name), is a woman who was imprisoned for murdering her husband. She has spent four years of the seven years in prison.
“There is no hope whether I will be accepted by my family after releasing from the prison,” she said.

Lala (pen name) is also being held in jail for murdering her husband, she has six children and says she killed her husband because of domestic violence, and there is no hope that after leaving prison, she could return to the arms of her family.
“I do not know where to go, because my mother is living abroad and my brothers have not visited me so far,” she said.

Farzana (pen name), 23, is another woman who is in prison because of being threatened by her husband. she has spent one year out of her five-year imprisonment.

Officials at the western Herat prison say: “Women who are released from prison, are placed in safe houses if they are not accepted by their families, and remain there until adequate facilities are provided for their presence at home.”

Women’s rights activists in Afghanistan say female prisoners are abandoned due to being involved in corruption.
