DID Press: European countries are accelerating discussions on a potential “European NATO” framework amid growing concerns over a possible reduction or withdrawal of United States involvement in the alliance, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The initiative, informally referred to as “European NATO,” aims to strengthen Europe’s command and control roles within North Atlantic Treaty Organization, while reducing dependence on US military capabilities.
The plan reportedly includes increasing the number of European officers in key NATO command structures and expanding the continent’s independent military capabilities to ensure operational continuity if US participation declines.
It also envisions building complementary defense assets alongside US forces to maintain collective security effectiveness within the alliance.
According to the report, Germany—which previously opposed the idea of a NATO less dependent on the United States—has now signaled preliminary support, suggesting an emerging European consensus on the proposal.
