Carney: Canada Must Reduce Economic Dependence on US

DID Press: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada’s decades-long close economic relationship with United States has now become a vulnerability that requires urgent correction.

In a video message released on Sunday (19 April), Carney said Canada must reduce its reliance on a single trading partner and move toward greater diversification of its economic relations.

He emphasized that shifts in the global landscape and ongoing political developments have highlighted the need to reassess economic policy.

The prime minister added that overdependence on one market can leave a country exposed during periods of global instability. He said Canada should strengthen domestic capacity while expanding trade ties with other countries to reduce economic risk.

The remarks come amid broader international concerns over potential trade tensions following threats of increased tariffs by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
