Taliban: Ashraf Ghani Can Return to Afghanistan

DID Press: Ahmadullah Wasiq says former president Ashraf Ghani is free to return to Afghanistan and live in the country like any other citizen.

Speaking to Shamshad TV, Wasiq stated that no official request has yet been made by Ghani regarding a return to Afghanistan, but stressed that the former president has the right to come back under the Taliban’s policy toward Afghan political figures abroad.

According to Wasiq, the policy of the Taliban’s Commission for Contact with Afghan Personalities recognizes the right of all Afghans to return and reside in their homeland.

Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, as Taliban forces entered Kabul and the former republic government collapsed. He has since been living in United Arab Emirates.

Since leaving office, Ghani has periodically commented on developments in Afghanistan and has at times criticized Taliban policies.

His departure from the country during the fall of Kabul triggered widespread public reaction and criticism among many Afghans.
