Tribal Elder Malik Tariq Wazir Among 3 Killed in Wana IED Blast

DID Press: Malik Tariq Wazir, the most prominent tribal elder of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe in South Waziristan, was killed in a bomb explosion in the crowded Rustam market of Wana, amid a growing wave of assassinations targeting tribal leaders in Pakistan’s border regions.

Local officials said at least three people were killed and four others wounded after an improvised explosive device detonated on Monday morning in the Rustam Bazaar area of Wana.

Among the victims was Malik Tariq Wazir, a highly influential mediator known for resolving tribal disputes and organizing local jirgas aimed at preserving peace in South Waziristan.

Tariq Wazir had previously been abducted by armed men in December 2024 before being released following mediation efforts by tribal elders.

The assassination comes amid a recent surge in targeted attacks against tribal figures in Pakistan’s tribal belt.

Earlier this month, Malik Saifullah Khan was killed after reportedly expelling individuals linked to local Taliban factions from a mosque in North Waziristan.

In late April, another tribal elder, Malik Fazal Wahid, was also assassinated in a similar attack.

Local analysts warn that the increasing attacks on tribal elders threaten traditional conflict-resolution mechanisms and social stability in Pakistan’s border regions.
