Russia Signals Conditional Support for Continuation of UNAMA Mission in Afghanistan

DID Press: UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan may continue its operations in Afghanistan, but Russia says its mandate extension should come with “specific conditions,” according to Moscow’s special envoy.

Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s special representative for Afghanistan, said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia that Moscow expects UNAMA’s mandate to be extended, while raising concerns about its performance.

He stated that while Russia believes the mission will likely be renewed, there are still questions regarding its activities and effectiveness, adding that these issues should be taken into account in any extension.

Kabulov emphasized that UNAMA remains important for managing Afghanistan’s humanitarian and political situation, but argued that reforms in its structure and operations are necessary.

The comments come amid ongoing discussions about the future of UNAMA, which was recently extended by the UN Security Council only until 17 June 2026, a shorter period than usual.

UNAMA serves as the UN’s primary political and humanitarian mission in Afghanistan, coordinating international aid and monitoring governance and human rights conditions.
