Tehran Says Progress in Talks With US, but Agreement Not Imminent

DID Press: Iran has confirmed progress in negotiations with United States, while stressing that a final agreement is not close due to what it describes as inconsistent U.S. positions and past unpredictability.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that although some issues have been resolved in the talks, it is “not possible to say an agreement is imminent.”

He noted that contradictory statements from U.S. officials and Washington’s previous conduct during diplomatic processes have made Tehran cautious in assessing the outcome.

His remarks came after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there has been “progress” in negotiations, while President Donald Trump also suggested the two sides are approaching a deal, though later emphasized there is “no rush” to reach one.

Baghaei reiterated that Iran will only speak of a finalized agreement once all necessary conditions for a “stable and reliable deal” are in place.

Analysts say Tehran’s cautious tone reflects past experiences and an effort to avoid premature expectations, while U.S. messaging appears aimed at managing domestic and regional political dynamics.

Despite signs of movement in the talks, differing narratives between Tehran and Washington continue to obscure a clear timeline for a potential agreement.
