French Left-wing Jews Reopen Debate on Zionism Amid Gaza War
DID Press: In France, a growing but still minority group of Jewish intellectuals, activists, and rabbis is increasingly distancing itself from Zionism, as the war in Gaza intensifies long-standing debates over Jewish identity and its relationship with the State of Israel.

While a significant portion of France’s Jewish community remains concerned about a resurgence of antisemitism, another segment fears being automatically associated with the policies of the Israeli government amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza Strip.
The issue has revived a broader intellectual and political debate within France’s estimated 600,000-strong Jewish population, exposing new ideological fault lines between Zionist and anti-Zionist perspectives.
Prominent figures such as Elad Lapidot argue that opposition to Israeli policies should not be equated with antisemitism, insisting that remaining silent in the face of what they describe as mass civilian suffering is ethically untenable.
Other intellectuals, including figures like Rony Brauman and Étienne Balibar, have also voiced criticism of Israeli actions, while even some traditionally right-leaning thinkers have expressed discomfort with current developments in Gaza.
Historically, French Jewish political identity has evolved through multiple currents, including republicanism, socialism, Bundism, and later Zionism, which gained prominence after the Holocaust and the 1967 war. However, some younger left-wing Jewish thinkers now argue for what they describe as a “liberation of Judaism from Zionism.”
In contrast, some Zionist-oriented scholars maintain that Jewish diaspora identity and Israel are inseparable historical realities, viewing early Zionism as a liberation movement that aimed to establish a national homeland rather than a colonial project.
Anti-Zionist Jewish groups in France, including organizations such as the Union Juive Française pour la Paix and Tsedek, continue to advocate for Palestinian rights and openly criticize Israeli government policies despite political and financial pressure.
The debate highlights a deeper question within French Jewish society: whether Jewish identity must remain tied to the Israeli state or whether it can evolve independently in a rapidly changing geopolitical and moral landscape.
