Faiq: Afghanistan Needs a Legitimate and Inclusive Government

DID Press: Afghanistan’s representative to the United Nations, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, has called for the establishment of a legitimate and inclusive government in Afghanistan, stressing that lasting peace cannot be achieved through exclusion or authoritarian rule.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Faiq welcomed the renewal of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), describing its continued presence as “necessary and vital” under the current conditions.

He said UN engagement is essential for supporting peace, stability, human rights, and the coordination of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.

Referring to the recent detention of women and girls in Herat, Faiq described the incidents as part of a broader pattern of “systematic discrimination, repression, and exclusion of women and girls.”

He emphasized that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through exclusionary governance and called for a genuine political process involving women and all ethnic and social groups.

Faiq further urged efforts to combat terrorism, uphold human rights, and ensure accountability, adding that Afghans deserve dignity, protection, and a future based on opportunity rather than fear.

He also expressed appreciation to UN Security Council members, the UN Secretary-General, UNAMA leadership, and staff for their continued work in challenging conditions.
