20,000-Capacity Grand Mosque Planned in Western Kabul

DID Press: Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of Taliban has announced plans to construct a large grand mosque in the Kot-e-Sangi area of Kabul, with a capacity of 18,000 to 20,000 worshippers.

According to an official statement, topographic surveying work has already been completed for the project. The allocated land covers approximately 55,398 square meters in one of the most densely populated districts of western Kabul.

Authorities said the survey aims to prepare a detailed master plan, collect initial design data, and support technical assessments needed for cost estimation and project implementation.

Officials added that the findings will form the basis for the next stages of architectural design and construction.

Kot-e-Sangi is considered one of Kabul’s most densely populated neighborhoods and has long faced challenges including limited urban infrastructure, traffic congestion, and shortages in public services.

Since returning to power, the Taliban administration has prioritized the construction of mosques and religious schools as part of its broader development agenda, even as international organizations continue to warn about Afghanistan’s worsening economic conditions, rising poverty, and heavy reliance on humanitarian aid.
