Afghanistan, Kazakhstan to Establish Joint Water Management Research Center in Kabul

DID Press: Afghanistan and Kazakhstan have agreed to establish a joint educational and research center for water resources management at Kabul University, aiming to strengthen cooperation in irrigation, agriculture, and climate resilience.

A cooperation memorandum was signed between the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, the Kazakh National University of Water Management and Irrigation, and Kabul University during the visit of a Kazakh delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin.

Under the agreement, the new center will be established in Kabul and will serve as the first joint academic and research platform between the two countries focused on water resources, irrigation systems, and sustainable agriculture.

Officials said the center will support training of specialists, academic exchange, joint research projects, and the development of modern solutions to water and agricultural challenges in the context of climate change.

During the Afghanistan–Kazakhstan business forum, Zhumangarin emphasized Kazakhstan’s focus on water diplomacy, efficient use of water resources, and expanding regional cooperation in the sector.

The initiative is expected to address key issues such as water security, environmental monitoring, food security, and climate adaptation across the wider region.

The development comes amid growing regional sensitivity over water infrastructure projects in Afghanistan, including the Qosh Tepa Canal.
