UN, SCO Discuss Afghanistan Stability Efforts

DID Press: A senior-level meeting between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the United Nations has taken place in New York City, focusing on regional cooperation, peace, security, and efforts to stabilize Afghanistan and Central Asia.

According to an SCO press release, the fourth round of consultations between the two organizations brought together delegations led by Ahmad Saidmuradzoda and Mohamed Khaled Khiari, responsible for Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific affairs.

During the meeting, the SCO delegation presented updates on preparations for its upcoming leaders’ summit in Bishkek, outcomes of ministerial meetings under Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship, ongoing institutional reforms, and expanded cooperation with UN specialized agencies.

UN representatives, in turn, briefed participants on their activities under the “Climate, Peace and Security” agenda and highlighted ongoing efforts aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan and supporting Central Asian countries in maintaining long-term regional peace and security.

Both sides also exchanged views on a broad range of issues related to the operational mandates of their respective organizations, emphasizing continued coordination on regional and global challenges.
