Kazakh Doctor: Afghanistan Remains Affected by Conflict Legacy

DID Press: A senior member of a Kazakh medical mission returning from Afghanistan has described the country as still suffering from the consequences of decades of conflict, noting that many young patients continue to endure severe injuries caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance.

According to Kazakh media reports, a team of doctors from Kazakhstan returned to Astana on Sunday after completing a humanitarian mission in Kabul.

Serik Balgazarov, who participated in the mission, said the team traveled to Afghanistan to provide scientific and medical assistance.

“All the surgeries we performed were extremely difficult and complex,” he said, adding that many patients were suffering from serious injuries linked to years of violence and insecurity.

Balgazarov noted that a significant number of young Afghans continue to face long-term physical consequences from mine explosions and other war-related injuries.

He emphasized that the mission focused on humanitarian assistance and professional cooperation, stressing that medical workers around the world share a common goal of helping people regardless of religion or beliefs.

The delegation included specialists in surgery, traumatology, cardiology, pediatrics, and urology. During their stay, they carried out complex operations on critically injured patients and children with congenital conditions, while also exchanging expertise with Afghan medical professionals and participating in joint medical consultations.

As part of the “Kazakhstan Medical Days” initiative, the delegation also delivered medical equipment and humanitarian supplies, including specialized Ilizarov apparatus devices used in the treatment of complex fractures.
