Taliban-Pakistan Border Clash Marks Fresh Escalation in Tensions

DID Press: Security tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have escalated after reports of a hours-long border clash between Taliban forces and the Pakistani military along the Paktia–Kurram frontier, amid deteriorating relations between Kabul and Islamabad.

According to Pakistani sources, the confrontation began after Taliban forces allegedly opened fire on Pakistani border posts using heavy weapons. Pakistan’s military responded with small arms, artillery, and other heavy weapons, reportedly targeting several Taliban border positions and defensive fortifications.

Despite the intensity of the exchange, no casualties have been officially confirmed, and the Taliban had not publicly commented on the Pakistani claims at the time of publication.

The clash comes as relations between the Taliban administration and Pakistan have deteriorated in recent months over cross-border security incidents, militant activity, and mutual accusations. Islamabad has repeatedly alleged that armed groups launch attacks from Afghan territory—claims the Taliban reject. In turn, Taliban authorities have accused Pakistan of violating Afghan airspace and carrying out cross-border strikes.

Amid the heightened tensions, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami, told Geo News that the Afghan Taliban had not prevented Afghan territory from being used against Pakistan, describing the issue as a major concern for Islamabad.

He called for continued dialogue between the two sides and suggested that religious scholars, as well as international Islamic organizations, could help reduce tensions. Naeem ur Rehman also said that China and Russia are working to facilitate improved relations between Kabul and Islamabad, adding that Türkiye could also play a constructive role.
