UK Allocates £8 Million to Address Climate Change Impacts in Afghanistan

DID Press: United Kingdom has allocated £8 million to fund a project aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change and creating alternative livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities in Afghanistan, the head of ActionAid Afghanistan said.

Hans Johansen, head of ActionAid Afghanistan, said the funding will support a project titled “Climate Change and Alternative Livelihoods” in several Afghan provinces.

He said the project will focus on vulnerable communities, with the goal of reducing climate-related risks, strengthening household economic resilience and creating alternative sources of income.

Afghanistan is among the countries that have contributed relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions but face severe consequences from climate change, including drought, flooding and declining water resources.

The United Nations has previously warned that Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
