Afghanistan Proposes Trans-Caspian Transit Route Linking Turkmenabat to Mazar-e-Sharif

DID Press: Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have discussed establishing a new transit route linking Turkmenabat with northern Afghanistan and Mazar-i-Sharif, as part of efforts to expand bilateral trade and transportation cooperation.

A delegation from the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries held talks with Turkmen officials and business representatives during a visit to Turkmenistan, focusing on strengthening commercial and transit ties between the two countries.

The Afghan side proposed establishing a transit corridor from Turkmenabat to northern Afghanistan and Mazar-i-Sharif, which could facilitate trade and strengthen transport connectivity between the two countries.

The talks also addressed removing obstacles to bilateral trade, expanding and facilitating operations at the Aqina and Torghundi crossings, and increasing cooperation in the energy and investment sectors.

The Afghan delegation also invited Turkmenistan to send a delegation of 100 businessmen and investors to Afghanistan to explore trade and investment opportunities. The proposal was reportedly welcomed by the Turkmen side.

The discussions come as Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have in recent years sought to expand economic, transit and energy cooperation and increase bilateral trade.
