UN Calls for Investigation Into Killing of 11 People in Kabul

DID Press: Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has expressed serious concern over reports that 11 people were killed during security operations in Kabul.

Bennett said in a statement that four people were reportedly shot and killed during a security incident in Kabul on Monday, while seven others were recently killed in the capital’s Eighth Security District.

He called for prompt, impartial and independent investigations into the incidents, stressing that any use of lethal force must comply with international human rights law, including the principles of necessity and proportionality.

The UN Special Rapporteur also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability regarding the use of lethal force during security operations.

The reported killings come amid growing concerns over crime and insecurity in Kabul as Afghanistan continues to face severe poverty, food insecurity and worsening economic conditions.
