Karzai: Afghanistan’s Independence Requires Peace, Unity and Education
DID Press: Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said lasting national independence depends on sustainable peace, social cohesion and equal access to education for girls and boys.

In a message marking Afghanistan’s Independence Day, Karzai said an educated human resource can only be developed when all children have access to education. He added that national unity would be strengthened through a shared sense of ownership and a common vision for the country’s future.
Karzai stressed that Afghanistan can achieve progress and gain a respected position in the international community only through national cohesion and strength.
The former president has repeatedly urged the Taliban to reopen schools and universities to Afghan girls.
Afghanistan gained independence from Britain 107 years ago under King Amanullah Khan. In recent years, however, the Taliban have commemorated Independence Day without highlighting Amanullah Khan’s historical role.
During the Taliban’s rule, there have also been reports of restrictions on public displays of Afghanistan’s national symbols, including the detention of some young people over raising the national flag or posting images of it on social media.
