US Army Secretary Resigns Amid Deepening Rift at Pentagon

DID Press: Dan Driscoll, US Army Secretary, has submitted his resignation to the White House following months of reported tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, exposing fresh divisions within President Donald Trump’s national security team.

Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported that Driscoll submitted his resignation after months of friction with Hegseth. The White House later confirmed that Driscoll was stepping down, although reports initially indicated that it was unclear whether his resignation had formally been accepted.

Driscoll, who had served as Secretary of the Army since February 2025 and is considered close to Vice President JD Vance, had pushed for military modernization, reforms to the Pentagon’s procurement system and reduced dependence on major defense contractors.

According to sources cited by Reuters, Driscoll raised concerns with administration officials about Army transformation and readiness, arguing that the removal of senior officers involved in implementing those efforts had disrupted the reform process. The reported tensions intensified following the dismissal of Gen. Randy George, the Army’s former chief of staff, and disputes over senior military appointments.

Driscoll had also played a role in the Trump administration’s diplomatic engagement related to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

His departure marks the latest major leadership change within the Pentagon and adds to concerns about instability and internal divisions in the Trump administration’s military and national security structure.
