$1.5M Cold Storage Facility for Fruit, Meat Opens in Herat

DID Press: A large cold-storage and preservation facility for fruit and meat, built at a cost of $1.5 million, has been inaugurated in Guzara district of Herat province, western Afghanistan.

Jamshid Kamal, head of the Kamal Herat Cold Storage facility, said the center was built on a 4,000-square-meter site over six months and in accordance with required standards.

According to Kamal, the facility has the capacity to store up to 3,000 metric tons of fruit and meat, with the possibility of expanding its capacity if needed.

Storage fees for fresh fruit range from 2 to 10 Afghanis per kilogram per month, depending on the type of produce and the length of storage.

Herat is one of Afghanistan’s major agricultural and horticultural provinces, producing significant quantities of fruit and vegetables each year. Improved cold-storage capacity could help producers and traders preserve perishable products for longer periods and reduce post-harvest losses.
