Afghanistan, Turkmenistan Move to Accelerate 500kV Power Transmission Project

DID Press: Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have discussed accelerating work on a 500-kilovolt (kV) electricity transmission project between the two countries, with officials also reviewing the implementation of the TAP project.

Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar, executive director of Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS), met with Murad Artikoff, head of the TAP project, and his delegation in Kabul.

According to DABS, the meeting focused on accelerating the 500kV transmission project and completing remaining work at the Noor-ul-Jihad electricity substation in Herat. The officials also discussed supplying electricity to Bala Murghab district in Badghis Province and arrangements for implementing the TAP project.

The Turkmen delegation called for the swift completion of the 500kV transmission project and expressed interest in launching the TAP project. The delegation said an initial roadmap for TAP is expected to be finalized in the near future.

The TAP-500 project is designed to transmit electricity from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan, with Afghanistan expected to use part of the electricity domestically before onward transmission to Pakistan. Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry said in 2025 that a joint roadmap and action plan for the project were being developed.
