Silk Bridge Reopens Between Afghanistan and Iran to Facilitate Trade, Transit

DID Press: A delegation from Afghanistan’s Nimroz Province, led by Hamed Ebrahim, head of the provincial governor’s office, met with officials from Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan Province at Milak border crossing, where the two sides agreed to reopen the Silk Bridge and facilitate cross-border transit. The move is expected to enable the passage of fuel tankers, support legal trade, and ease some of the challenges faced by Afghanistan travelers at the border.

In a statement on Sunday, September 7, Nimroz governor’s office said the meeting covered a range of issues including transit, trade, visa issuance for Afghanistani travelers, anti-smuggling measures, and broader border cooperation.

During the talks, Ebrahim urged Iranian authorities to reopen the Silk Bridge for transit, noting that the Taliban’s caretaker government has introduced new regulations to allow legal import of petroleum products.

Both sides agreed to permit fuel tankers from each country to cross the bridge and to keep the route open for all forms of transit.

Nimroz delegation also raised concerns over visa-related difficulties for Afghanistani travelers and stressed that local officials are working closely with officials in Zahedan to resolve border challenges and expand trade cooperation.
