Iran–Afghanistan Railway Nears Completion with 87% Progress

DID Press: Khaf–Herat railway, a project launched 18 years ago, is now 87 percent complete, marking a major step toward boosting regional transit connectivity.

The Khaf–Herat line, one of the largest infrastructure projects linking Iran and Afghanistan, has entered its final stage of development. With an investment of more than $75 million from Iran, the 225-kilometer route has steadily advanced since its launch in 2007 and reached significant milestones by July 2025.

Once completed, the railway will not only streamline bilateral trade but also substantially increase the region’s transit capacity. Officials expect Afghan traders will soon be able to transport goods directly across the border, with freight trains traveling from Khaf through to Bandar Abbas and onward to international waters.
