DID Press: US State Department confirmed Friday that the potential sale of $111.8 million worth of weapons to South Korea may proceed. According to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), South Korea has requested the purchase of 624 GBU-39/B small-diameter precision-guided bombs, which are designed for striking ground targets with the capability to destroy tanks and bunkers.

The agency said that the sale would “support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a key ally that plays a vital role in political stability and economic progress in the Asia-Pacific region.” These bombs are intended to help South Korea maintain “necessary deterrence in the region” against current and future threats, and to enable full operational coordination with U.S. military forces.
It was also announced that the American defense company Boeing will manufacture these weapons, and no additional U.S. government personnel or contractors need to be deployed to South Korea for this sale.
