US Lawmakers Criticize Trump Administration’s Afghan Migrant Policies
DID Press: A group of 61 members of the US Congress has sharply criticized the Trump administration’s policies toward Afghan migrants, warning that recent restrictions amount to “collective punishment” and risk undermining America’s moral credibility.

In a joint letter sent to the US secretaries of state and homeland security, the lawmakers objected to increased limitations imposed on Afghan migrants and refugees. They said that following a shooting incident involving two National Guard members, the administration broadly suspended the processing of Afghan refugee and asylum cases, while also placing restrictions on holders of Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs).
The lawmakers stressed that many Afghans affected by the measures had worked alongside US forces for years or otherwise meet the legal requirements for entry into the United States.
According to the letter, the policies are not only unjust but could also have serious negative consequences for Washington’s credibility and its ethical commitments toward allies who supported US missions abroad. The signatories warned that continuing such measures could further erode trust in the United States’ promises to its partners.
