African Union Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

DID Press: Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, issued a statement condemning Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland – a province of Somalia – as an independent and sovereign state.

“The Chairperson once again emphasizes the African Union’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as full support for Somali authorities’ efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and advance inclusive governance,” his statement reads.

“Any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity contradicts the fundamental principles of the African Union and risks setting a dangerous precedent with wide-ranging consequences for peace and stability across the continent,” he added.

Israeli regime’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israel recognizes the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign country. Somaliland, located in northwestern Somalia along the Red Sea coast, unilaterally declared independence in 1991 but has not yet received international recognition.
